What is a photo colouring book?

It is a colouring book where the pictures are your own people and places: our software draws each photo as clean black outlines on white paper, ready to colour, and a person checks every page.

Most colouring books are full of characters nobody in the family has met. A photo colouring book swaps them for Grandma in the garden, the cousins on the beach and the dog asleep on the sofa. Faces are simplified, as they are in any line drawing, but the scenes are yours, so there is always something to talk about while the colouring gets done.

It isn’t the same as a photo book, which prints your photos in colour to look at. It also differs from a book personalised with a name, where the pictures are the same for everyone who buys it. In a photo colouring book, every page starts as a photo you chose.

The book is A4 portrait, saddle-stitched (stapled), printed on one side of 150gsm paper with a 300gsm card cover and a cut-out felt-tip guard at the back. It’s posted flat in a plain brown, board-backed envelope. There is no price inside, so we can post it straight to the person it’s for.

Upload your photos, check the free preview and order when you’re happy. We take care of the drawing, checking, printing and posting.

Choose 8 to 20 favourites (clear, well-lit photos with large faces make the best pages), then pick a line style and write your cover title.
Check every page free
We email you when your preview is ready. Look through the whole book and swap any photo whose page you don’t like.
We check, print and post
Once you’ve paid, a person checks every page before printing. We aim to dispatch within 3 working days, then Royal Mail Tracked 48 usually takes 2–3 working days.

Choosing photos for your book

Close-ups beat crowds: choose photos where the faces are large, sharp and in good light.

A good mix is a few portraits, a few small groups and one or two favourite places or days out. Photos taken straight from a phone are ideal. Dark, blurry or very busy shots make muddled pages, and screenshots or pictures saved from social media are often too small to print sharply.

Pets are welcome, though fur is harder to turn into clean lines than a face, so look closely at those pages in your preview. Our guide to choosing the best photos has examples of what works.

Make it yourself, or have it made?

You can turn a photo into a colouring page yourself by tracing it or using a photo app, and for one or two pages that is often the quickest option. A whole book is more work: every photo needs redrawing and tidying, then printing on decent paper and binding.

Questions about photo colouring books

How many pages are in a photo colouring book?

Every photo you upload becomes one full colouring page, so your book has 8 to 20 colouring pages. Around them are the cover with your title, a dedication page with tips for using the book, a colour-reference page of your original photos and a “Draw your own family” page, plus a felt-tip guard to cut out at the back. If you upload an odd number of photos (9, 11, 13, 15, 17 or 19), your book also gets a bonus “Our family tree” page to fill in together. With an even number of photos it isn’t included, because your pages fill the book exactly.

Can I make a photo colouring book from the photos on my phone?

Yes. Photos straight from a phone camera are ideal: you can upload JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WebP files of up to 25MB each, at least 500 pixels on the shortest side. Screenshots and pictures saved from social media are often too small to make a sharp page.

Is a photo colouring book the same as a photo book?

No. A photo book prints your photos in colour to look at. A photo colouring book turns each photo into black outlines on white paper, so children (and grown-ups) can colour the people and places in it. Ours also includes a page of small versions of the original photos, so you can match real colours if you want to.

Can I see the whole book before I pay?

Yes, you see a free preview of every page before you pay anything. The preview is watermarked, and you can swap any photo or change your mind at no cost.

Can you send it straight to the person it’s for?

Yes, just enter their address on the secure payment page. There is no price anywhere in the parcel, and your dedication at the front of the book can carry your message.

How long does delivery take?

We print and post your book within 3 working days of your order, and Royal Mail Tracked 48 usually takes a further 2–3 working days.
